Position Overview

The Structural Steel Draftsman is responsible for producing accurate and detailed shop drawings, erection plans, and fabrication documents for structural steel and miscellaneous metal projects. In addition to drafting, this role supports the estimating department with quantity takeoffs and pricing, and assists project management with coordination, scheduling, and client communication. The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, technically strong, and comfortable managing multiple priorities across drafting, estimating, and project delivery.

 

Responsibilities

 Drafting & Detailing

  • Prepare structural steel and miscellaneous metals shop drawings, erection drawings, and 3D models using AutoCAD, Advance Steel, Tekla, or similar software.
  • Interpret architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings to develop accurate fabrication details.
  • Create material lists, bolt schedules, weld symbols, and connection details in accordance with CISC and project specifications.
  • Coordinate with engineers, fabricators, and site supervisors to resolve design conflicts and ensure constructability.
  • Revise drawings based on RFIs, design changes, and site conditions.

Estimating Support

  • Perform quantity takeoffs from drawings for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and related components.
  • Prepare cost estimates, including materials, labour, equipment, and subcontractor pricing.
  • Review tender documents, specifications, and addenda to identify scope requirements and potential risks.
  • Maintain pricing databases and historical cost information.
  • Support bid preparation, including assembling tender packages and clarifying scope with suppliers.

Project Management Assistance

  • Support project managers with project scheduling, tracking milestones, and monitoring progress.
  • Prepare and maintain RFI logs, change order logs, and progress draw SOV’s as required
  • Communicate with clients, engineers, and site teams to coordinate approvals, resolve issues, and ensure timely delivery.
  • Assist with procurement, including ordering materials, confirming lead times, and coordinating deliveries.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings and provide technical input during fabrication and installation phases.

 

Requirements

  • Diploma or certification in Structural Steel Detailing, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in structural steel or miscellaneous metal drafting.
  • Exposure to fabrication shop environments or construction sites.
  • Experience supporting project management or estimating functions.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows and 3D modelling.
